Tutoring Among Youth: Definition, Effectiveness, and Underlying Mechanisms

Tutoring is currently being considered by the Québec government as one of the key measures to prevent and address learning delays experienced by children as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is an appealing support strategy that complements the preventive efforts of educators, teachers, and parents, its implementation in school settings presents several challenges. In this presentation, we will define tutoring and, based on research-based evidence, explain the conditions necessary for effective tutoring in schools, as well as the underlying mechanisms that contribute to its impact on children’s learning, academic success, and school perseverance.
